First I Was Skeptical But... It Is So Easy To Use My Relief Pharmacist
Learned It In Minutes
"My
name is Gaston Bedard and I am the Pharmacy Director at Neighborly
Pharmacy in St. Petersburg Florida. We were the first pharmacy
to have Pharmacy Automation System’s D-60 machine. It’s
been in our pharmacy since early 2007. I can now testify
first hand that the PAS D60 functions just like I hoped it would,
and is a great benefit to our operation.
Neighborly Pharmacy dispenses on average, less than 100 prescriptions
during our 8 hour days. At first I was skeptical concerning
what benefits the D-60 could bring to us. I’ve had
some experience with automation in the past and was not looking
forward to dealing with those negative issues again. Previous
experience told me that we would be spending a large amount of
time in training, and dealing with complex computer interfacing
and other problems. But the D60 is a stand-alone system,
installed in minutes, and was functional almost immediately. It
is so very simple to use - and without daily maintenance which
can be common to other automation systems.
Because of accuracy concerns – important to us and to our
patients - we did several months of hand count verification before
I would concede that this machine’s accuracy is right on. With
the exception of hand loading the vial, placing the label on, and
capping the vial, other automation machines could not offer any
additional benefits to us. Often, those perceived time
saving functions evaporate with offsetting time spent in loading
vial hoppers, and in removing the cap from each prescription
for medication verification.
We use relief Pharmacists occasionally, and even though each
person’s
pace is different, the D-60 keeps things flowing at an even pace. It’s
so easy to learn how to operate that the relief Pharmacist is able
to run the machine in just minutes. We love this aspect along
with knowing the machine is internally scanning, verifying, and
comparing each prescription’s NDC before it will dispense.
Automating all of our medications would be nice, but not practical
considering the cost factors. By using the D60, we’ve
automated 60 of our highest volume medications (about 40 to 50
percent of our daily fills). We truly appreciate the difference
this machine has made in our Pharmacy. It has especially
been a lifesaver during peak times, allowing us to remain relaxed
and confident that the proper medication and counts are being safely
dispensed. I would not want to go back to hand counting all
prescriptions again. I am glad our Pharmacy decided to Automate. It
really has given me the extra needed time for our patients. I
can’t see our pharmacy considering any other system.
